Written by Gyéresi Árpád, Tőkés Béla

The organization of doctoral studies at the Faculty of Pharmacy in Targu-Mures has a respectable tradition since 1953. Since the beginning, the organizing departments were Pharmacognosy and History of Pharmacy, later joining these other two departments Pharmaceutical Technology and Pharmacology. Disciplines like Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Physical Chemistry belonging to the field of chemistry were added to the list in 2000. The first part of this synthesis will discuss issues related to research in the field of Pharmaceutical Chemistry. The approached topics of theoretical and practical interest in the field of Pharmaceutical Chemistry have combined the vast experience of the discipline in chromatography with new techniques adopted in the last decades. After the year 2000, when Romania was about to join the EU the compulsory implementation of the European Pharmacopoeia provisions was not an issue anymore. During 2000-2013, there were 11 PhD thesis compiled at the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry. The main topics focused on the enantiomeric separation of chiral drug substances, the research of pharmakon stability by using high-performance methods, the research of pharmakon - auxiliary substances interaction. Based on these activities, specialized mainly in capillary electrophoresis, a complete school has developed. The results of researches mostly supported by the international program CEEPUS, which were based on multiple collaborations, were published in prestigious specialty journals and were presented at scientific events in the country and abroad.
