Medicinal plants from the area of Lake Besenyő

Written by Virág Szeréna gyh., Varga Erzsébet

The 2 km long Lake Besenyő is one of Covasna county’s largest catchment basins besides Lake Rétyi. The catchment basin was established in the 80’s by constructing a dam on a creek coming from the Bodoc Mountains. The lake lies on 86 hectares. It used to serve irrigation purposes. We tried to make an inventory of medicinal plants in Covasna county because there is a growing need for herbs in the area. We collected the necessary plants in April, May, June and July 2009 and on parcels (10 m2) in August. In the inventories of medicinal plants which were used for decades and centuries we found 70 species of medicinal plants. We found some plants with powerful effects (7). The area seems to be rich in medicinal plants, although low precipitation was recorded that year. Achillea millefolium L, Mentha longifolia L. Huds., Tanacetum vulgare L., Agrimonia eupatoria L. and Cichorium intybus L. were found in large quantities.
