The physician Nyulas Ferenc was also the leader chemist of his epoch. He was interested especially in mineral water analysis. In this domain, his main work is: Analysis of Transylvanian mineral waters, published in three volumes, in Kolozsvár, in 1800. For mineral water analysis he used quantitative and qualitative analytical methods. For the first time in Transylvania, he used titrimetric methods. He discovered the manganese in mineral waters and demonstrated the conserving effect of carbonic acid. He initiated the introduction of organic measure unit. Nyulas is the author of the first chemistry handbook in Hungarian language and created the chemistry terminology in Hungarian.
