Treatment of paralytic lagophthalmy with gold lid-implant: a case report

In paralytic lagophthalmy in case of insufficient result with conservative treatment we choose surgery. At the Ophthalmology Clinic of TgMures partial or total blefarroraphy was used until 2007. We present the first local application of a known technique. The patient underwent surgery for a neurinoma of the acoustic nerve on the right side two months earlier. Afterwards right facial nerve palsy appeared with a consequent paralytic lagophthalmy. Local treatment with artificial tears and corneotrophic gel proved insufficient. The surgical treatment was chosen, which consisted of a 1,00 g gold implant in the right superior eyelid. From the first postoperative day the lid occlusion was good, in the following six months no complications appeared. As a conclusion we can establish that a well-known surgical technique has been used locally for the first time, with functional and esthetical results that exceed that of a blepharorrhaphy.
