Our experiences with antiviral treatment in patients with chronic hepatitis C

In the last years antiviral therapy for chronic hepatitis C has become more effective. The aim of the authors was to study the effectiveness and the adverse reactions during the treatment of antiviral therapy in patients with chronic hepatitis C. A retrospective analysis has been made for patients treated in the Center of Hepatology in Gyula. Between the years 1996 and 2007 217 patients were treated 272 times. A continuous improvement was noted in sustained virological response, from 15% by interferon monotherapy, to 30% by interferon plus ribavirin combination and to 31% by pegilated interferon plus ribavirin combination. Adverse reactions caused by the treatment were observed in several cases, most of them were however moderate and treatable. There is a need for more effective treatment modalities, including optimized, individualized dosing and new antivirals for the therapy of patients with chronic hepatitis C.
