Although there is no level I evidence concerning the benefit of mannitol in stroke patients, it is traditionally used in our county, sometimes even without regard to the recommendations. We studied 1423 patients admitted with stroke to the Mures County Hospital for one year. We found that in the studied subgroups (divided by altered level of consciousness or neurological state on admission, CT lesions, various doses of mannitol), mannitol shows no evident beneficial effects on survival or on improvement in symptoms.
