Written by Bara Tivadar

Breast cancer has the highest incidence in women. Surgical intervention has a primordial role in its treatment. For a period of 100 years, the surgery of breast cancer had a radical character. In the last 30 years there have been changes in the surgery of breast cancer; the conservative surgery was developed to the detriment of the radical mastectomy. These changes were caused by the development of the oncobiology, the modern diagnostic methods and the adjuvant treatments. The introduction in the medical practice of the determination of the sentinel lymphatic nodule, decreased the number of the axillary lymphadenectomies. The modern methods in the surgery of breast cancer prevent the complications of the radical mastectomies. Concerning the global surviving rate, the postoperative results of the conservative surgery are similar with those of the radical mastectomy. The application of the modern conceptions in the surgery of breast cancer is conditioned by the precocious diagnosis of the cancer.
