Angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs) have an important role in the management of essential high blood pressure either alone or in combination with other antihypertensive drugs (ß1-blockers, ACE inhibitors, diuretics as hydrochlorotiazide associated in the same tablet, calcium channel antagonists). Beside the main pharmacological effect, these drugs show cardiovascular protection and good renal, hemodynamic, neurohormonal and antithrombotic effects. The sartan drugs have proven their efficacy and safety in blood pressure control and significant influence in reducing cardiovascular risk along with the protection of important organs. The most important target of therapy with ARBs (candesartan, losartan, telmisartan) is the improvement of quality of life and the reduction of mortality and morbidity from cardiovascular causes.
