Aim of the study: To explore the usable options in order to enhance the quality of nursing practice and education regarding the nurses’ behaviour who attend children after kidney transplantations. Methodology and sample: a questionnaire was distributed at the beginning of 2009 in the Nephrology and Dialysis Department of the 1st Child Clinic of Semmelweis University in Budapest. Our results were explored involving 19 nurses. The interview and observation methods were added to the test. We made the analysis with descriptive statistical method and we used the Excel program. Results: Unfortunately, the question asked by the children “Why me?” can’t be answered, neither by the doctor nor by the nurse or the parent. The transplantation is a miracle in a child’s life. The nurses have different opinions about the changes in the parent-child relationship after the transplantation. Conclusions: Unfortunately during the training of the nursing staff there are only a few possibilities which can help the positive development of empathy. This is also typical in the training of paediatric nurses. Those children wards where the staff can be children-centred are very lucky places. In the study it was concluded that it’s necessary to keep self-awareness trainings for the medical staff, where they are prepared for appropriate communication and they have the possibility to exchange experiences.
