The life of a physician family before and after the second world war

Written by Szabó Zsuzsanna oh.

The author presents the life and activity of the physicians from the Szabó family and their contribution to the history of medicine. Elder Szabó Jenő (1887-1959) graduated medicine in 1911. He worked as a neuropsychiatrist and medical officer between 1914 and 1918, and as a neuropsychiatrist in Dicsőszentmárton. After his position was abolished, he was a district doctor in Radnót. After 1940 he worked as a neuropsychiatrist next to professor Miskolczy. He was co-author of the volume entitled The Nursing of Infants (1939). He had three sons: Jenő, György, Zoltán. Younger Szabó Jenő (1915-1975) graduated medicine in 1938. He worked as a gynecologist at Pestszenterzsébet, Kolozsvár, and then Kézdivásárhely, where he started a maternity nurse school. He was in Russian captivity. After returning, he was placed to Szentgyörgy, Kézdivásárhely, and Kovászna, where he organized an obstetrics and gynecology ward. He worked there until his death. Szabó György (1920-2011) graduated philology in 1943. He was in Russian captivity. After returning he worked as a high school teacher. Later he worked as a professor at the Babeş-Bolyai University. He had 425 publications. We reveal those which are about the history of medicine. Older Szabó Zoltán (1924-) graduated medicine in 1950. He was an assistant-lecturer next to professor Putnoky, when on political grounds he was transferred to the Public Sanitation Authority of Marosvásárhely, and then arrested. After his penalty expired, he worked at Kézdivásárhely with his wife as a laboratory physician until his retirement. His wife was excluded for two years from the University of Medicine (she refused to divorce her imprisoned husband). Their child, younger Szabó Zoltán (1956-) graduated dentistry in 1981. He works as a dentist in Kézdivásárhely.
