20th Century Changes in Stature of Schizophrenic Women

Written by Tóth Gábor, Buda Botond, T. Bozi Edit

Having deduced from 20 body measures, authors describe the morphological characteristics of 86 properly diagnosed Western Hungarian schizophrenic women. Data are being compared with those found in major 20th century publications. Authors have been led to the conclusion that the somatotypes of schizophrenic patients, first described by Kretchmer, underwent notable changes during the last hundred years. Abundant nutritional supply and poor physical activity may explain changes during the first half of the 20th century. On the other hand, changes in the late 1900s are most likely due to the obesity as a common side effect of most antipsychotic drugs.
