The journal Orvostudományi Értesítő (Bulletin of Medical Sciences) was founded in 1876 by Dr. Endre Hőgyes. In the first 63 volumes, by the year 1948, were published 1638 medical articles on 14772 pages. After a forced break, since 1990 the journal is published every year. The journal is published by the Medical and Pharmaceutical Section of the Transylvanian Museum Society. The regular publication schedule has been maintained every year.

The journal covers all fields of medicine (clinical studies, experimental medicine, surgery, dentistry and pharmaceutics). The journal publishes original articles presenting results of scientific research and reviews commissioned by the editorial board. The journal also publishes the best studies presented at the Students’ Research Conference. The only condition for publication is meeting high quality standards. The editorial board is composed of professors of the University of Medicine, Pharmacy, Science and Technology of Târgu Mureş, and since 2007 has been expanded to include distinguished international experts. Articles are published only after a positive evaluation by peer reviewers invited by the editorial board. Most reviewers are professors and lecturers at the University of the University of Medicine, Pharmacy, Science and Technology of Târgu Mureş.

The journal presents not only the latest results of Romanian physicians, researchers and teachers, but also includes a large number of authors from abroad. Between 2002 and 2010, it was published four times a year. Since then, the journal has appeared annually in two regular and two special issues. The latter contain the abstracts of the Scientific Conference of the Medical and Pharmaceutical Section of the Society and of the Student Scientific Conference of the University of Medicine, Pharmacy, Science and Technology of Târgu Mureș. The editorial office accepts manuscripts on a continuous basis.

From 2007, the visual format of the journal changed significantly, being published in A4 format in two columns. From 2008, the provision of English and Romanian keywords became mandatory; from 2018, articles have been assigned DOI identifiers and include English abstracts and other information required for indexing in international databases. From 2022, articles are published in Hungarian with a full parallel English translation. Since 2007, the full texts of the articles (PDF) have been freely available online in open access.

Since 2003, the journal has been nationally accredited by the competent authority of the Romanian Ministry of Education, CNCSIS/CENAPOSS (registration number 274). According to the ranking system introduced in 2005, the journal was classified in category C, and since 2008 it has held category B accreditation. Through cooperation with the publisher De Gruyter – Sciendo (currently Paradigm – De Gruyter Brill), the journal has been indexed in international databases since 2018.
